The Probability of Finding a Suitable Related Donor for Bone Marrow Transplantation in Extended Families

چکیده
In bone marrow transplantation, the advantages of family donors over unrelated donors are threefold. (1) Family donors are better matched because they share complete haplotypes. (2) The time between the start of the search and the actual transplantation can be much shorter than for unrelated donors. (3) Related bone marrow transplantation is cheaper. We developed a procedure for calculating the probability of finding a suitable donor among cousins and bloodrelated aunts and uncles (the extended family). The procedure calculates the following probabilities ( P ) : (I) Pthat any blood-related uncle or aunt is a suitable donor, (2) P that a suitable donor exists in all blood-related uncles/aunts (from

The introduction and evolution of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) could be traced back to 1950s, to the studies on interactions among irradiation, covering spleen and bone marrow from it and injection of bone marrow cells. Today, HSCT is considered a well-established, effective and promising means of therapy for various malignant and non-malignant medical conditions, both in chil...

Hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) which give rise to different blood cell types are present within the bone marrow microenvironment, especially in flat bones such as skull, vertebrae, pelvis and chest. Interacting factors such as stromal derived factor-1/CXCR4, very late antigen-4/vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, Lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1/ intercellular adhesion molec...
متن کاملThe Results of Bone Marrow Transplantations. in 10 Iranian Patients Travelled and Treated Abroad are Presented Here
SUMMARY Up to 15 years ago, bone marrow transplantation was experimental, but in the recent years it has gained an important role in the field of Medicine, and it has clearly been established as a therapeutic modality for a wide range of diseases. During 1950-1955 when marrow transplant was first attempted in human, little was known about transplant antigens. Supportive care techniques such...
متن کاملTyping of HLA Class I by Polymerase Chain Reaction-Sequence Specific Oligonucleotide Primer (PCR-SSOP) Technique in Iranian Cord Blood Donors
Background: HLA compatibility between transplant donor and recipient is one of the major determinants of transplant outcome. Objective: To determine HLA class I by PCR- Sequence-Specific Oligonucleotide Probe (PCR-SSOP) in cord blood donors. Methods: Genomic DNA of 142 cord blood samples registered at the Cord Blood Bank of Iran at Hematology, Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplantation Researc...
